This publication seeks to clarify where and how greenhouse gas emissions arise in Asian aquaculture. A study was carried out on three aquaculture systems: Nile tilapia in Bangladesh, Indian major carps in India and striped catfish in Viet Nam. The report highlights the variations within each farming system at every stage, and makes suggestions for methods that could reduce related emission intensities. Applying best practices uniformly on farms and thereby increasing efficiencies appear to be key avenues for improvement. The results of this study will help develop cost-effective ways of improving aquaculture performance and reducing emissions, and indicate point the way for impoving data in future studies.
