Anita Shreve begon al met het schrijven van romans toen ze nog werkte als lerares. Omdat ze niet het idee had dat ze er haar geld mee kon verdienen, maar wel graag wilde blijven schrijven, ging ze werken als journalist. Een aantal jaar woonde en werkte ze in Kenia. Nadat ze enkele van haar artikelen uitwerkte tot haar eerste boek, besloot ze zich toch fulltime op het schrijven van romans te richten. Haar carrière nam een enorme vlucht toen Oprah Winfrey haar roman The Pilot?s Wife (Vallend licht) uitkoos voor haar Book Club. De boeken van Anita Shreve zijn tegenwoordig niet meer uit de bestsellerlijsten weg te denken.
