Omschrijving

William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-82) was an English historical novelist born in Manchester. He first trained as a lawyer but soon found the legal profession held no attraction for him. After briefly trying the publishing business, he devoted himself to journalism and literature, his first success as a writer coming with the publication of Rookwood in 1834 which featured highwayman Dick Turpin as its leading character. 39 further novels followed, the last appearing in 1881, the year before his death. Windsor Castle, first published serially in 1842 prior to book publication the following year, is an historical romance with gothic elements set in 16th century England depicting Henry VIII's pursuit of Anne Boleyn. Interspersed with the main story are events relating to Herne the Hunter, a legendary ghost that haunts Windsor Forest. The aim of this evil spirit is to capture the souls of certain individuals. Henry's attempts to thwart him prove unsuccessful, leading to tragic consequences for some characters. Henry faces opposition from various quarters in his desire to replace his first wife Catherine of Aragon, amongst them Thomas Wyatt who wants Anne for himself and Cardinal Wolsey who uses his own daughter to lure Henry away from Anne, and the machinations of the Court play a significant role in the story. When it is later revealed that Anne has been involved with Henry Norris, the King uses this as evidence to have her executed, and the story concludes with Anne being replaced by Jane Seymour.
