It tells the story of Edward Waverley, a young English soldier who is sent to Scotland during the Jacobite uprising of 1714. He leaves his upper-class home in the north of England and travels first through the Scottish lowlands, and then into heart of the rebellion in the highlands. It is considered the first historical novel in western literature, and became so popular that his later works were often sold as being written by 'the author of Waverley'.
