Le tsutsugaki, qui désigne aussi bien une technique
japonaise de décor réservé à la colle et de teinture à
l'indigo que l'oeuvre textile qui en procède, connaît
son apogée durant l'époque d'Edo (1603-1868) pour
disparaître progressivement à la fin de la seconde
guerre mondiale. Il faut attendre, à la fin des années
1930, le regard de Sôetsu Yanagi, créateur de la notion
mingei («art populaire»), pour que soit reconnu au
tsutsugaki sa valeur proprement artistique.

L'exposition du musée Guimet rassemble, aux côtés
d'un tsutsugaki du peintre Foujita et de la collection
Krishnâ Riboud, des oeuvres pour la première
fois présentées hors du Japon. Véritables tableaux
empreints de puissance et de sérénité, ces textiles
invitent à pénétrer au coeur de la culture japonaise.

leur redécouverte et de leurs usages, ainsi que la

The word tsutsugaki defines both a Japanese technique of
indigo reserve-dyeing and the textiles proceeding from this
technique, reached its peak during the Edo period (1603-1868)
to gradually disappear by the end of the Second
World War. However, it had been at long last acknowledged
as a proper form of art in the late 1930s, thanks to Soetsu
Yanagi, creator of the concept of mingei ("folk art").

This exhibition at the Musée Guimet brings together,
alongside a tsutsugaki once owned by the painter Fujita
and those from the Krishna Riboud collection, amazing
works displayed for the first time outside Japan. True
paintings full of power and serenity, these textiles are an
invitation to penetrate the heart of the Japanese culture.

This richly illustrated catalogue discusses the technique
of tsutsugaki, the contexts in which they appeared, their
rediscovery and their everyday uses, as well as the symbolic
decors that give them their spectacular beauty.
