Publié en 1942 sous le titre Damals, cet album visait à revaloriser en Allemagne l'image de la SS-Totenkopf-Division, une grande unité motorisée des Waffen-SS assez particulière dont le noyau avait été formé en 1939 par les gardiens de camps de concentration, les tristement célèbres SS-Totenkopfverbände. Il fallait prouver, par le texte et par l'image, qu'en 1940, sur les champs de bataille de France, cette division avait fait montre des mêmes valeurs militaires que les meilleures divisions de la Wehrmacht.

Eric Lefèvre a complété le fac-similé intégral de l'ouvrage d'origine d'un historique de l'unité et d'une biographie de son commandant, le SS-Gruppenführer Eicke.

Chacune des 89 photos et chaque texte font également l'objet de remarques critiques et d'indispensables précisions rédigées par le même auteur.

Published in 1942 with the title Damals, this album aimed at enhancing in Germany the reputation of the SS-Totenkopf-Division, a rather unusual motorised Waffen-SS formation whose nucleus had been shaped with concentration camp guards, the sadly famous SS-Totenkopfverbände.

Proof had to be given by texts and photos that in 1940, on the battlefields of France, this division had showed the same valour as the best Wehrmacht divisions.

Eric Lefèvre has added to the original facsimile a historical account of the unit and a biography of its commander SS-Gruppenführer Eicke. Each of the 89 photos and each text forms the subject of remarks and necessary annotations by the same writer.
