Thirteen year old Danny Tompkins must deal with his mother's death, but on the day of the funeral people keep coming to his house, and seem to be partying. As he retreated to his bedroom—the closest thing to a safe haven available—he couldn't understand why those adults behaved as they did, or why his younger cousins just kept playing. So he "hid" and fumed.
Years later, the adult Daniel helps clean out his dad's house, and relives those memories. Eventually they become the subject of a sonnet.
