When Louise meets Tim in 1969 he immediately tells her that he is in the process of divorcing the mother of his two young sons. Once Tim's divorce is finalised and the boys choose to be adopted by their new step-father, Louise and Tim move away and she devotes herself to their own family life and two children. Over 30 years later, when Tim suddenly hears that his sons want to make contact, she encourages him to meet them and to develop a bond. However, Louise soon finds her relationships with her husband and own children thrown into confusion by this new interloper into her family. Unable to see step-son Wayne as anything but a threat or to overcome her feelings of hostility, Louise soon finds herself in danger of losing all that she holds dear as she battles with her emotions and those of her own close family whilst feeling incapable of doing anything further to resolve the situation.
