McGrath (1871-1932) was a bestselling American novelist, short story writer and screenwriter. He began his writing career as a reporter and columnist for the Syracuse Herald and published his first novel in 1899. His next book, 'The Puppet Crown' (1901) reached No.7 on the bestseller list for that year and he went on to write numerous mass market novels about love, adventure, mystery, spies and similar themes, publishing on average more than one a year. Three more of his books were in the top ten bestsellers in their year of publication and several were adapted for the screen. He also published a number of short stories in the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines and several of his novels were serialised prior to publication in book form. This novel was first published in 1919.
