Omschrijving

The Way of All Flesh is a novel written by Samuel Butler, first published in 1903. The book follows the life of Ernest Pontifex, a young man from a wealthy family who rebels against the strict Victorian values of his parents and the society he lives in. Ernest struggles to find his own identity and purpose in life, while dealing with the expectations and pressures placed upon him by his family and society. He experiences love, loss, and betrayal, and learns valuable lessons about life and morality along the way. The novel is a satirical critique of Victorian society, its values, and its institutions, and explores themes such as religion, education, family, and the nature of humanity. The Way of All Flesh is considered a classic of English literature and has been praised for its realism, humor, and social commentary.1916. Butler spent a good many years writings this extraordinary book, and finished it a good many years ago, but in 1902, on his deathbed, gave for the first time permission to have it printed, characteristically reversing the conventional deathbed repentance and confession. He, who had abandoned all faith except his own infallibility, ardently believed in his posthumous fame, which has become a reality. This novel is a life novel, it is a biography. Three generations of the hero's family are portrayed with much detail; the plot of the story is simply chronological; the only agreeable woman in the book was a personal friend of the author. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
