In 1907, the popular farm magazine Hearth & Home inaugurated its States-of-the-Union series of quilt patterns for which readers from around the country were asked to contribute. The 48 best patterns, including original designs and the senders' "favorites," then appeared in the magazine, and are reprinted here along with the patterns from the then "outlying possessions" of Alaska and Hawaii. After years of searching for now very scarce issues of the magazine, the editors have collected all 50 blocks and prepared full-size patterns.
Basic instructions are provided, along with yardage requirements and many of the original anecdotes and comments.
