Omschrijving

The Two Captains is a classic adventure novel written by W. Clark Russell. The story follows the lives of two captains, Nicholas Vargan and John Hardy, who are both in love with the same woman, Agatha Woolf. The novel is set in the mid-19th century and takes place mainly at sea, with the two captains navigating through various challenges and dangers. The book begins with the introduction of Nicholas and John, who both serve on the same ship. They are both skilled sailors and have a deep respect for each other. However, their friendship is put to the test when they both fall in love with Agatha Woolf, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Agatha is torn between her feelings for the two captains, and the situation becomes even more complicated when they are all stranded on a desert island together. As the story progresses, the two captains face many challenges, including storms, mutinies, and battles with pirates. They also encounter a range of interesting characters, including a mysterious woman named Madame de Barral and a wealthy aristocrat named Lord Reginald.Throughout the novel, Russell's vivid descriptions of life at sea and the various adventures that the characters experience make for an exciting and engaging read. The Two Captains is a timeless tale of love, loyalty, and adventure that will appeal to readers of all ages.1897. Clark Russell joined the British merchant service, made several voyages to India and Australia, and while off the coast of China witnessed the capture of the Taku forts by the combined British and French forces. He retired from the merchant service and took up a literary career. His early seafaring experiences, as well as accounts of historical voyages, provided much of the material for his fifty-seven sea novels. The Two Captains begins: It was one Tuesday in the City of London, in the early part of the century, and the large dining-room of the Mitre tavern was full of hungry men sitting in boxes and giving hoarse notes to their wants. It was a very long room with a very low ceiling. The ceiling was covered with foliage and flying figures, and Mr. Jenkinson, the landlord, believed it was worth a thousand pounds. It was a rich scene of old world life, when citizens wore tail coats and white cravats, when Ludgate was choked with debtors, and when they were hanging men and women in the crowd-blackened thoroughfare opposite the jail whose records are hellish. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
