Omschrijving

The Tragedy of Sir Thomas Overbury is a play written by Richard Savage and first published in 1724. The play is based on the true story of the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury, a courtier and friend of King James I. Overbury was poisoned while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1613, and his death was later revealed to be the result of a conspiracy involving several members of the court.Savage's play dramatizes the events leading up to Overbury's murder, focusing on the relationships between the various courtiers involved in the conspiracy. The play features a cast of characters including the Earl of Somerset, Overbury's former friend and eventual murderer; Lady Frances Howard, Somerset's wife and the instigator of the plot; and various other courtiers, including the scheming Sir Robert Carr and the loyal Sir Ralph Winwood. The Tragedy of Sir Thomas Overbury is notable for its vivid portrayal of courtly intrigue and its use of blank verse, a style of poetry popular in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. The play was well received by audiences at the time of its publication and has since been recognized as a significant work of Restoration drama. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
