A native Welshman transplanted to America, Stanley (1841-1904) seemed without purpose to his life until his historic meeting with David Livingstone in central Africa. Profoundly touched by Livingstone during their travels together, Stanley resolved to take up Livingstone's work of exploration after his death in 1873.
