Omschrijving

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a historical novel written by Baroness Orczy. The story is set during the French Revolution and follows the adventures of a mysterious hero known as the Scarlet Pimpernel. The Pimpernel is a master of disguise who rescues French aristocrats from the guillotine and smuggles them to safety in England. The novel begins with the French Revolution in full swing and the Reign of Terror in full force. The Pimpernel's daring exploits have made him a legend in both France and England, but his true identity is known only to a few trusted followers. One of these followers is Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy Englishman who is widely regarded as a foppish dandy.Sir Percy's wife, Marguerite, is a French actress who is suspected of being a spy for the French government. When Marguerite is approached by the French ambassador to England and asked to spy on the Scarlet Pimpernel, she is torn between her loyalty to her husband and her duty to her country. As the story unfolds, Marguerite becomes increasingly involved in the Pimpernel's activities and begins to suspect that her husband may be the elusive hero. Meanwhile, the French government becomes increasingly desperate to capture the Pimpernel and unleashes a ruthless agent named Chauvelin to track him down. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a thrilling adventure story full of action, suspense, and romance. It is also a powerful commentary on the brutality of the French Revolution and the heroism of those who risked their lives to save others.During the greater part of the day the guillotine had been kept busy at its ghastly work: all that France had boasted of in the past centuries, of ancient names, and blue blood, had paid toll to her desire for liberty and for fraternity. The carnage had only ceased at this late hour of the day because there were other more interesting sights for the people to witness, a little while before the final closing of the barricades for the night. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
