The toolkit's emphasis is on practicality, stressing a deeper understanding of the plays that departs from many contemporary performance-based texts on the assumption that not every teacher's approach can or should primarily require acting skills to understand the Shakespeare plays. Instead, the RSC Toolkit provides a clear roadmap to the multi-stage lesson plan including, key objectives, lesson descriptions, preparation and resources, starter activities, main activities, story synopsis, extensive breakdowns of scenes and the complete "daily" classroom resources a teacher would need from notes to worksheets to lesson plans and homework assignments. Lessons offer guidance through each play that have been designed to be flexible, where teachers can augment skills in areas which need extra help and bypass curriculum topics that aren't needed. The lessons are designed in series that can either be followed in their entirety or as stand-alone pieces.
