Omschrijving

The Refutation of All Heresies, Book 9 is a religious text written by Hippolytus, a Christian theologian and bishop of Rome in the 3rd century. This book is part of a larger work that aims to refute various heretical beliefs that were prevalent in the early Christian church. In Book 9, Hippolytus focuses on the teachings of a group called the Naassenes, who were a Gnostic sect that believed in a complex system of spiritual hierarchies and secret knowledge. Hippolytus critiques their beliefs and practices, arguing that they are contrary to the teachings of the Bible and the orthodox Christian faith. Throughout the book, Hippolytus provides detailed descriptions of the Naassene beliefs and practices, including their worship of the serpent as a symbol of divine wisdom and their use of various mystical rituals and incantations. He also offers counterarguments and evidence from scripture to refute their claims and demonstrate the errors in their theology. Overall, The Refutation of All Heresies, Book 9 is a valuable historical document that sheds light on the religious debates and controversies of the early Christian church. It provides insight into the diversity of beliefs and practices among early Christians and the efforts of orthodox leaders like Hippolytus to maintain the purity of the faith. Now Callistus brought forward Zephyrinus himself, and induced him publicly to avow the following sentiments: ""I know that there is one God, Jesus Christ; nor except Him do I know any other that is begotten and amenable to suffering."" And on another occasion, when he would make the following statement: ""The Father did not die, but the Son."" Zephyrinus would in this way continue to keep up ceaseless disturbance among the people. And we, (5) becoming aware of his sentiments, did not give place to him, but reproved and withstood him for the truth's sake. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
