"Trouble in paradise?" mocked Queen Cilia, who had been silently watching Zelda's angry expression. "Why, I'd almost suppose you wanted Calain dead."
--
Zelda frowned. "I haven't done anything."
Lythara lifted her white brows. "Oh? You have done nothing except distract and sabotage since you've been here! You are trying to stop me finding the dragons!"
Zelda stared in disbelief. At last she said, "You're mad! You've been here too long."
"Am I mad? Am I?" went on Lythara, a crazed sort of light in her eyes.
--
"My girl," said Arthur proudly as he watched Calain eagerly devour the stew Siobhan had brought her. "My girl is a Knight of Falcon. And so big and strong! No one could best you! Not even the Rose Guard!"
Calain looked up in surprise. "Art thou not ashamed of me? I slew the queen. I am a traitor to the realm."
"You acted in your lady's defense," said Arthur seriously. "You betrayed no one."
--
"I do believe thou hast used me," said Calain, frowning down at Imodel.
Imodel stuck an indignant hand on her hip. "To escape certain death in the Gold Keep? Yes, I did. As if you didn't use me to forget about your lady. Except you cannot forget her, try as you might." She placed a sympathetic hand on Calain's heart and said, "Poor thing. Your heart is broken, but it will mend."
"No part of me is broken!" Calain protested.
Imodel laughed at the lie.
--
When Calain glanced up, it was to find Imodel watching her.
"You really love Zelda, don't you?" she said in amusement.
"I love no one," said Calain indignantly. "I am cold. And empty!"
Imodel laughed softly. "No. You love her. You wouldn't be so angry if you did not."
Calain looked away. She had no argument and she really wanted one. Finding no words to defend herself, she said irritably, "Don't change the subject, Imodel. Why were you imprisoned at the Gold Keep? What hast thou done?"
"Well, I didn't slay the queen," said Imodel with a laugh and looked away.
