Kincaid cut Charley off. "No offence, but surely an intelligent woman like you doesn't believe in mystical lunacy."

He didn't know the half of it. What would he say if she told him that the life of a girl called Zanazca had been unfolding in her imagination ever since she arrived? She pushed aside the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. "Do either of you believe that deeds we committed in a previous lifetime can affect our lives in the present?"

He let out a snort of disbelief. "You're kidding, right? Tell me you're not talking about karma and reincarnation."

Before Charley could answer, Colin interjected, "I'm surprised a scientist like you even knows the words, Kincaid."

"What if I am talking about karma and reincarnation?" she countered.

"Only the naïve and the gullible believe in reincarnation. There's absolutely no scientific proof."

Colin patted his friend's hand. "Why don't you take a stab at broadening your narrow outlook, Kincaid? Science doesn't resolve everything. I'll have you know that reincarnation is a fundamental tenet of some of the world's greatest religions."
