The hybridity of buddhism

Les articles rassemblés dans ce volume sont le résultat d'un projet de recherche de trois ans intitulé « Pratiques du bouddhisme tibétain à Taïwan » (2012-2015), soutenu par la fondation Chiang Ching-kuo pour les échanges scientifiques internationaux. Dans le but de contribuer aux études portant sur la globalisation des religions, ce volume adopte le concept de l'hybridité comme principal modèle d'analyse des continuités et des ruptures dans les pratiques du bouddhisme tibétain, à la fois au niveau global et en interaction avec les traditions religieuses locales des sociétés taiwanaise et chinoise. L'hybridité permet aux traditions culturelles (celles religieuses et matérielles tibétaines) de recruter de nouveaux adhérents (principalement Han) et d'être reconnues localement, régionalement et mondialement en tant que nouvelles formes de religiosité distinctes émergentes. Les essais se concentrent sur les acteurs chinois, taïwanais ou tibétains à l'origine de ces hybridités et examinent les stratégies qu'ils adoptent afin d'être reconnus comme des maîtres légitimes du bouddhisme tibétain.

Contemporary Encounters between Tibetan and Chinese Traditions in Taiwan and the Mainland

The articles published in this volume are the result of a three-year project entitled « Practices of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan » (2012-2015), funded by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchanges. In an attempt to contribute to the field of the studies on the globalization of religions, this volume adopts the concept of hybridity as the principal model of investigation of the continuities and ruptures in the practices of Tibetan Buddhism, both on a global level and in interaction with the local religious traditions of Taiwanese and Chinese societies. Hybridity helps cultural traditions (the religious and material Tibetan ones) to recruit new adherents (mostly Han) and to be recognized locally, regionally, and globally, as new forms of distinct religiosity emerge. The volume focuses on the agencies at the origin of these hybridities, i.e. the Chinese, Taiwanese or Tibetan masters involved, and examines the strategies they employ in order to position themselves as legitimate masters of Tibetan Buddhism.
