Pendant presque soixante ans, de 1966 à 2023, Olivier Picard n'a cessé d'étudier la monnaie des cités antiques, balayant un vaste territoire allant de Chalcis en Eubée à Marseille et d'Alexandrie d'Égypte à Thasos, la grande cité insulaire de l'Égée du Nord, publiant à son sujet plus que tout autre ne l'avait fait précédemment. Les fruits de ses recherches, aussi bien sur le plan historique qu'archéologique, ont considérablement enrichi notre compréhension de la numismatique du monde grec. Le recueil présenté rassemble les pièces maîtresses de ses travaux sur la frappe et la circulation des monnaies à Thasos, son terrain de prédilection, depuis la période de colonisation jusqu'à l'antiquité tardive.

For nearly sixty years, from 1966 to 2023, Olivier Picard studied the coinage of ancient cities, covering a vast territory from Chalcis, Euboea to Marseille and from Alexandria, Egypt to the great insular city of Thasos, in the Northern Aegean. He published more on the subject than anyone previously had. The fruits of his research, both historical and archaeological, have considerably enriched our understanding of numismatics in the Greek world. This compendium brings forth the highlights of his work on minting and the circulation of coins in Thasos, his field of choice, from the colonization period to late antiquity.

Through these studies, arranged chronologically in the order of the numismatic series of Thasos, Olivier Picard tells the captivating story of the evolution of a currency and of its island, offering a unique perspective on the symbiosis between numismatics and the history of Thasos.
