Young Cathy Barlow and her brothers lost their parents years before. The Barlow family lives on a sprawling country estate known simply as Barlow. There are two historic Victorian homes on the Barlow property, the Big House and the Small House.
The oldest Barlow brother rents the Small House to a famous writer and his socialite sister. The famous writer seems interested in Cathy. He says he's moved to Barlow to take care of his recently widowed sister.
The writer and his sister grow closer to the Barlows, too close.
