Lorenzo Scupoli (1530- 1610 A.D.), was a native of Otranto, Italy, and a member of the Theatines. His work, Il combattimento spiritual (The Spiritual Combat), is a pragmatic guide to Catholic living. Quite simply, it guides one to reject selfish longings, and to replace these with sacrifice and charity. It remains one of the most revered pieces of Catholic spirituality.
