L'archipel des Îles Chausey, rythmé par les plus grandes marées d'Europe, est situé au nord de la baie du Mont-Saint-Michel (Manche, Normandie). La Grande Île, la seule île habitée par une trentaine d'insulaires, se situe à un peu plus de 15 km au large de Granville. Autrefois, repaire de flibustiers et immense réservoir de granit pour les remparts de Saint-Malo, l'archipel de Chausey est devenu, à la belle saison, un espace apprécié des amateurs de sites naturels. Le mayennais Marin-Marie, navigateur (et peintre officiel de la Marine à partir de décembre 1935, considérait Chausey comme son port d'attache ; dans sa maison aux volets bleus, surnommée la maison du capitaine, Marin-Marie disposait d'un atelier tourné vers le Sound.
