Over the past 20 years, the concept of secularisation has lost its plausibility for European self-interpretation. Literary studies provide a new perspective on this concept during its current crisis, examining secularisation not as a historical process, but as a narrative structure, that is, a culturally established interpretative framework into which individual and collective experiences can be poured and arranged into convincing narration.
