Au milieu du XIX^e siècle, la presqu'île du cap Ferrat est encore un simple hameau de pêcheurs, sous la tutelle administrative de Villefranche-sur-Mer. Le roi des Belges Léopold II, qui se fait construire une première villa dans le quartier de Passable en 1897, sera suivi par de nombreuses autres personnalités venues ici en villégiature. Aristocrates, banquiers, capitaines d'industrie et artistes font dès lors appel à de prestigieux architectes et paysagistes pour y édifier des propriétés et des parcs somptueux. Didier Gayraud, au travers de sa riche collection personnelle de documents et de photographies anciennes, nous offre au fil des pages un remarquable récit mis en images, racontant comment cette petite bourgade est devenue en moins d'un siècle l'un des lieux les plus prisés et exclusifs de la Côte d'Azur.

In the mid-19th century, the Cap Ferrat peninsula was still a simple fishing hamlet, under the administrative authority of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Leopold II, King of the Belgians, who had his first villa built in the Passable neighbourhood in 1897, was followed by many other prominent figures who came on holiday there. Aristocrats, bankers, captains of industry and artists all called on the services of prestigious architects and landscape designers to build sumptuous properties and parks. Didier Gayraud, drawing on his rich personal collection of documents and old photographs, offers a remarkable pictorial account of how, in less than a century, this small town became one of the most exclusive and sought-after spots on the French Riviera.
