Juliette Cunliffe was in her late 50s when she moved to Nepal in 2009, taking with her three of her Lhasa Apso dogs, her interest in the Himalayan regions having stemmed from her deep interest in Tibetan dog breeds, about which she has written many books and has judged them in various countries throughout the world.
She first travelled to the Himalaya in 1985, establishing close relationships with Tibetan people and later also with Nepalese, so now understands much about both cultures. In this book she writes, entertainingly, about many of the situations she has encountered since arriving here to live, the complicated procedure of building Peace Dragon Lodge and some amusing anecdotes about the variety of guests who have stayed there.
She also introduces the reader to her charitable work with dogs and with children, having been prompted to set up a Trust for a children's hostel following Nepal's devastating earthquakes of 2015, and including an absorbing chapter about what it was like to experience a quake of such magnitude.
