Tom has to spend the summer with his aunt and uncle. Being bored, Tom begins to walk in the fields and the woods. One day he spots a fox leaping in the grass. Tom writes to his friend Petie and tells him that seeing the fox has been the most exciting thing that has happened. Tom didn't want to tell anyone about the black fox because he didn't think anyone would believe him. When a turkey is killed by a fox, Uncle Fred sets a trap using one of her babies to catch and kill the fox. Tom sneaks out one night to free the baby fox and its mom. Tom looks for the family of foxes but finds they have gone.
