Young George has always spent her summers in a small town on the Breton coast, where Gauvain lives. Both have known each other since they were children. Over time, he has become a rough sailor who, in theory, should not be in the least interested in someone like her, a well-born Parisian university student. However, one night, the two get carried away by a physical attraction so powerful that it will knock down all social conventions and inevitably unite them in secret for life. The writer Benoîte Groult, famous among other things for her activism for women's rights, manages to give voice to a deeply free female character and, through her, recreate the language of feminine passion and sexuality . However, today it is considered one of the great love stories of contemporary French narrative.
