Letters of a Woman Homesteader is an autobiographical collection of letters written by Elinore Pruitt Stewart to her former employer in Denver, Colorado. The letters chronicle Elinore's experiences as a homesteader in Wyoming in the early 1900s. Elinore, a young widow with a young daughter, leaves Denver to start a new life in Wyoming. She takes up a homestead of 160 acres and begins to build a home for herself and her daughter. Through her letters, Elinore shares her thoughts, feelings, and experiences with her former employer. She writes about the challenges of living on the frontier, including harsh weather conditions, isolation, and the difficulty of finding reliable help. Despite the challenges, Elinore perseveres and learns to adapt to her new way of life. She becomes friends with her neighbors, including a Scottish rancher named Clyde Stewart, whom she eventually marries. Elinore's letters are filled with vivid descriptions of the natural beauty of Wyoming, as well as the struggles and triumphs of homesteading. Letters of a Woman Homesteader is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a pioneering woman in the early 1900s. Elinore's writing is engaging and insightful, and her story is a testament to the resilience and strength of women in the face of adversity.1914. Pruitt, a widow and mother who washed clothes for a living in Denver, planned to work as a housekeeper for some rancher while learning all she'd need to know about homesteading a place for herself. In 1909 she went to work for Clyde Stewart, whose ranch was near Burnt Fork, Wyoming, and within six weeks she married him. Her delightful letters written from the time of her arrival until 1913, authentically depict an Old West that has been progressively obscured by those who portray it most often. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
