Le siècle des poudriers (1880-1980)

Le Musée International de la Parfumerie à Grasse et la bibliothèque Forney à Paris co-organisent une exposition consacrée à la poudre de beauté et ses écrins de 1880 à 1980 autour de la collection particulière d'Anne de Thoisy-Dallem, présentée pour la première fois au public.

Le Musée International de la Parfumerie poursuit sa découverte de l'univers du parfum et des cosmétiques du XX^e siècle en se focalisant sur l'histoire de la poudre de beauté et son univers frivole et fantaisiste. Si l'usage de la poudre est pluriséculaire, c'est bien au cours du XX^e siècle quelle se développe à la fois d'un point de vue technique, chimique, mais aussi dans ses usages et ses contenants, le poudrier et la boîte à poudre. Cette période de transformation profonde voit affluer en masse des poudriers divers et variés, à la fois dans leurs formes ou dans leurs matériaux. Cette production en série est le reflet de la société au tournant du XX^e siècle, tant dans l'évolution de ses moeurs que dans l'émancipation féminine.

Cet ouvrage est l'occasion de rentrer dans l'intimité du rituel de maquillage des élégantes par le biais de l'importante collection de poudriers d'Anne de Thoisy-Dallem, du fonds remarquable de boîtes à poudre, flacons de parfum, réclames et affiches du Musée International de la Parfumerie, ainsi que des prestigieuses affiches de la bibliothèque Forney.

The international Museum of Perfumery in Grasse and the Forney Library in Paris are co-organising an exhibition devoted to face powder and its containers from 1880 to 1980, based on Anne de Thoisy-Dallem's private collection, which will be presented to the general public for the first time.

The International Museum of Perfumery is continuing its exploration of the world of twentieth-century perfume and cosmetics by focusing on the history of beauty powder and its frivolous and fanciful world. Although face powders have been used for many centuries, it was not until the twentieth century that it developed from both a technical and chemical point of view, as well as in terms of its uses and containers, the compact (poudrier de sac) and the powder box (boîte à poudre). This period of profound transformation saw the mass production of compacts that were diverse and varied, both in their shapes and materials. This serial production reflected society at the turn of the twentieth century-the changes in its mores and female emancipation.

This book provides us with an opportunity to explore the intimacy of the makeup rituals of elegant ladies via Anne de Thoisy-Dallem's important collection of compacts, and the remarkable collection of powder boxes, perfume bottles, advertisements, and posters from the International Museum of Perfumery, as well as prestigious posters from the Forney Library.
