Le Mans Classic, compétition de voitures historiques qui ont disputé les 24 Heures, est devenu depuis 2002 l'un des plus beaux spectacles au monde que peut donner le sport automobile. Des voitures de toutes époques s'y retrouvent pour en découdre et surtout pour restituer l'histoire de leurs joutes d'antan. Bentley des années 1920, Alfa Romeo et Bugatti des années 1930, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Maserati des années 1950, Ferrari, Ford, Cobra des années 1960, Matra, Porsche ou Ferrari, encore, des années 1970 font entendre leurs cris de guerre et donnent à voir leurs silhouettes.

Le photographe Laurent Nivalle et son complice, le journaliste Robert Puyal, ont arpenté le circuit, les stands, les paddocks de cette immense kermesse de l'auto. Leur ouvrage n'est pas un compte-rendu de course, mais il s'efforce de capter l'atmosphère singulière de ces 24 Heures très spéciales où les dixièmes de seconde sont autant à l'ordre du jour que les décennies du XX^e siècle.

Chasing after speed

Le Mans Classic is a 3-day meeting devoted to historic cars that have taken part in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Since 2002 it has become one of the greatest motor sporting spectacles in the world. Cars from every era flock to the French circuit to go head-to-head and above all to recreate the history of their battles in days gone by. The sounds of Bentleys from the 1920s, Alfa Romeos and Bugattis from the 1930s, Jaguars, Aston Martins and Maseratis from the 1950s, Ferraris, Fords and Cobras from the 1960s, Matras, Porsches and Ferraris from the 1970s resound through the pine trees in the Sarthe as spectators marvel at their mind-blowing shapes.

Photographer Laurent Nivalle and his collaborator, journalist Robert Puyal, have visited the circuit, pits and paddocks of this huge festival celebrating the motor car. Their book is not a compilation of race re - ports. Its aim is to capture the very particular atmosphere of these 24 Hours in which tenths of a secondare as important a part of the week-end's programme as the decades of the XX^th century.
