La cité de Carcassonne

Deux auteurs pour célébrer une ville

Deux auteurs qu'un siècle sépare. L'un né en 1848 fut, par le texte et le dessin, l'un des plus prolifiques de son temps. L'autre, chanteur, conteur, né presque cent ans plus tard au pied de la Cité de Carcassonne, est la mémoire vivante de l'Occitanie.

Albert Robida fut comparé par certains à Gustave Doré, pour la qualité et la profusion de son oeuvre d'illustrateur. D'autres voient en lui un second Jules Verne, pour la richesse foisonnante de son imagination littéraire. Entre deux romans d'anticipation, il signa une collection d'ouvrages illustrés intitulée « La Vieille France ». Carcassonne s'inscrit dans le prolongement de cette série. Une impression luxueuse sur papier Japon, initiée par le photographe-éditeur local Michel Jordy.

C'est le fac-similé de cet ouvrage que l'on trouve ici avec (pages 24-25) la fameuse vue d'ensemble du monument, reproduite à l'époque sur une affiche des « Chemins de fer d'Orléans et du Midi » que les collectionneurs achètent aujourd'hui à prix d'or.

Claude Marti, un siècle après Robida, nous conduit dans le dédale non plus d'une seule citadelle, mais d'une ville double. La Cité sur roc aux cinquante deux tours est en effet flanquée d'une ville basse, bastide alanguie en plaine sur les rives du fleuve Aude.

Ce voyage-découverte, mené tambour battant dans une prose vigoureuse, est à la fois un parcours initiatique et une réflexion sur l'histoire, entre ombres et lumière.

Les regards croisés, portés par le visiteur visionnaire à l'aube du vingtième siècle et par l'enfant du pays à l'orée du vingt et unième, se conjuguent en un vibrant poème de mots et d'images. Une ode à Carcassonne.

Two authors who celebrate a town

A century separates them. The one, born in 1848, was, in the number of both words and illustrations he produced, one of the most prolific of his time. The other, singer and storyteller, born a century later in the City of Carcassonne, is the living memory of Occitania.

Albert Robida is comparable, in the minds of some, with Gustave Doré, for the quality and profusion of his work as an illustrator. Others see in him a second Jules Verne, for the teeming richness of his literary imagination. Between two futuristic novels he published a collection of illustrated works with the title Old France (La Vieille France). Carcassonne is treated in one of this séries - a well-produced edition on Japanese paper, the brain-child of a local photographer-cum-publisher called Michel Jordy.

From our facsimile of this work which we present here, we show, pp 24-25, the famous view of the town's outline, wich featured at the time of the original publication on a poster for the « Orléans and Southern Railways», for which collectors pay absurd prices today.

Claude Marti (Occitan singer, poet, novelist and essayist) leads us, a century after Robida, into the labyrinth not of one city but of two. The Citadel set on rock, with its fifty-two towers, looks out over the lower town, languid and fortified in the plain on the banks of the river Aude. Marti's voyage of discovery, to the accompaniment of the beat of his masculine prose, is both an introduction and a chiaroscuro reflexion on history.

The thoughts of the visionary visitor at the dawn of the twentieth century and those of the native at the start of the twenty-first intertwine to form a vibrant poem in words and images : no less than an Ode to Carcassonne.
