The thesis studies the 18th Century musical tradition of Gottingen, a medium-sized town without a court. It analyses voluminous dossiers and takes elements of everyday life and regional belongings as well as thoughts to dispute in early modern period into consideration. Individual behaviour of musicians conducted to manifold transformation of their function. Divergent strategies of communication led to different levels of success on appeals procedures, hierarchical positioning and public reputation. The forfeiture of traditional patterns was accelerated by the foundation of the university and especially by the establishment of a Collegium musicum. On the other hand, the presence of the alma mater faciliated the genesis of a novel type of compositions, connected to names such as Schweinitz and Rudorff.
