In 1169, Norman knights of Henry II began the English conquest and colonization of Ireland. In 1969, eight hundred years later, a rising of Irish nationalists against what was left of it began in the six counties of Ulster. Twenty-nine years of civil war followed, between the Provisional Irish Republican Army and other Republican armed groups and the UK armed forces and Protestant militias. That war, one of many that have marked Irish resistance to English colonization, ended in 1998 with the Good Friday Agreement. Three years later, British prime minister, Anthony Blair, launched the UK on a new imperial enterprise, this time in Afghanistan and then in Iraq, to crush resistance to Israel and its protecting superpower, the USA.
