Intimate Letters of Carl Schurz 1841 to 1869 is a collection of personal letters written by Carl Schurz, a German-American statesman, soldier, and journalist. The book features a selection of Schurz's most intimate and revealing letters, written between 1841 and 1869, to his wife, Margarethe Meyer Schurz. The letters provide a fascinating insight into Schurz's personal life, including his thoughts on politics, his experiences as a soldier during the American Civil War, and his relationships with family and friends. They also offer a glimpse into the daily life of a prominent figure in 19th-century America, including his travels, social engagements, and personal struggles. The book is edited by Joseph Schafer, a historian and scholar of American history, who provides a detailed introduction and annotations to help readers understand the context of Schurz's letters. Overall, Intimate Letters of Carl Schurz 1841 to 1869 is a compelling and insightful read for anyone interested in the life and times of one of America's most influential figures.1928. Born in Germany, Schurz was compelled to flee after the collapse of the revolutionary movement. He emigrated to the United States, where he settled in Watertown, Wisconsin and became a strong supporter of Abraham Lincoln, who appointed him U.S. minister to Spain. Schurz resigned this position to serve in the Civil War. Promoted to major general he fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Chattanooga and served with Gen. William T. Shermans army in North Carolina. Schurz was Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune, editor of the Detroit Post, and joint editor and owner of the St. Louis Westliche Post. He was U.S. Senator from his adopted state of Missouri. Schurz supported Rutherford B. Hayes, whose hard money views he approved, for the presidency. He served in Hayess cabinet as Secretary of the Interior. He was an editor of the New York Evening Post and wrote editorials for Harpers Weekly. In 1884, convinced of James G. Blaines unfitness for office, Schurz led the mugwumps in their opposition to Blaines nomination and candidacy. Schurz supported the Democrat Grover Cleveland in that year and again in 1888 and 1892. He turned to William McKinley in 1896 because of William Jennings Bryans currency views, but in 1900 he supported Bryan because of his anti-imperialist views.
