Doué d'une sorte d'évidence philosophique lorsqu'on y fait appel dans les discours juridiques ou politiques, la notion d'humanité manque pourtant d'histoire philosophique propre. C'est pourquoi les différents textes de ce recueil cherchent à l'affronter de face, depuis ses usages les plus singuliers et ses développements en contretemps au sein même des discours majeurs de la philosophie : du cosmopolitisme kantien à la phénoménologie, de l'humanisme et de sa critique à la pensée spinoziste. Les différents visages de l'humanité se jouent alors, hors de toute possibilité d'appartenance, comme des moments de lucidité et de résistance. Sans représentation ni modèle univoques, « les humanités » se construisent, de manière à la fois risquée et passive, inquiète et affirmative, au double niveau non réconcilié de l'intime et du global.
