Omschrijving

Charles Ball (c.1780-?) was an enslaved African-American from Maryland, best known for his account of his life as a fugitive slave The Life and Adventures of Charles Ball (1837). He also served in the Chesapeake Bay Flotilla of the US Navy under the command of Commodore Joshua Barney in the War of 1812. This abridged version of his memoir, renamed Fifty Years in Chains, or The Life of an American Slave, was published in 1859. Born into slavery around 1780, his owner died when he was four and his mother and siblings were sold on to different buyers. Over the following years he was passed on to various slaveholders and from 1798-1800 served as a cook on the USS Congress. By 1805 he was married with children but sold to a South Carolina cotton planter and separated from his family who had to remain in Maryland. After several further moves and suffering severe ill-treatment, he escaped and returned to his family in 1810. He then enlisted in the US Navy and fought at the Battle of Bladensburg in 1814. After the death of his first wife in 1816 he remarried and bought a small farm with money he had saved, but in 1830 was traced by the man who had whipped him 21 years earlier, kidnapped and taken back to Georgia. After escaping again he found that his family had been taken into slavery and his farm lost to a white man. Legally still a slave, he was unable to claim his rights and relocated to Pennsylvania where he wrote his 1837 memoir. Nothing is known of his later fate, nor that of his wife and children.
