Omschrijving

Did you know that there are over 40 species of falcons? While they're widely distributed across the world, only one of these species lives in Antarctica. Despite the fact that they're absent from Antarctica, closely related raptors did exist there during the Eocene era. Find out more about these incredible birds of prey by reading this book. Also check out our Falcon Birds Facts for more information. Although they're commonly mistaken for eagles and hawks, falcons are in fact raptors. They live in mountain ranges and coastlines and hunt prey with their feet and beaks. The peregrine falcon is the most endangered species of falcon. This is the species most closely related to the American eagle, but the peregrine falcon has an extremely diverse range that spans the globe. A female falcon lays two to five eggs, ranging in color from white to mottled brown. The female incubates the eggs for 30 days, while the male leaves the nest to find prey. The chicks grow up to become independent individuals and fledge 40 to 45 days after hatching. They depend on their parents for food for their first three months, but after that, they can hunt for their own food. Peregrine falcons are incredibly dangerous. They can rip the flesh off their quarry with their hooky beaks. Their hooked talons can even pierce the spinal cord of their quarry. In fact, the peregrine falcon has been used for falconry for over 3000 years. They are a popular hunting animal during WWII. If you see a peregrine falcon in the wild, make sure you watch out for it!
