Face nord

Face nord est un livre né en marchant dans «la vallée des terrils», le bassin minier Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Charles Delcourt a navigué à vue, de terril en terril, prenant le temps de la
découverte, aiguillé par son regard et sa formation de paysagiste. Vivant la photographie
comme le bagage d'un passager curieux des autres, il crée des images drôles, émouvantes,
en sympathie avec les personnes rencontrées. Andreï Kourkov, célèbre auteur du Pingouin,
et de nombreux romans traduits dans 36 langues, découvre les photographies de Charles
Delcourt et décide de le rejoindre sur son parcours. Il marche aussi et écrit trois récits inédits
qui prolongent les images, animent les personnages. Charles et Andreï, escaladeurs du
réel, sont reliés aux habitants du bassin minier par un trait spécifique, un sens de l'humour
solidaire qui franchit toutes les frontières.

Face nord was born out of a walk in 'the spoil tips valley', Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield.
Charles Delcourt navigated visually, from one spoil tip to another, taking the time to explore,
steered by his vision and his training as a landscape architect. He experiences photography
as a piece of luggage carried by a traveler interested in other people and produces funny,
moving pictures that are sympathetic towards those he met. Andrey Kurkov, appraised
writer of Death and the Penguin alongside other novels translated into 36 languages,
discovered Charles Delcourt's photographs and decided to join him on his tour. He walked
along and wrote three unpublished texts which echo the pictures and bring the characters
to life. Charles and Andrey, reality hunters, are united with the inhabitants of the coalfield by
a characteristic trait: a sense of humor full of solidarity which knows no boundaries.
