The most famous sculptors who work with Corten steel (atmospheric corrosion resistant steel) are the American Richard Serra, the French artists Bernar Venet, Philippe Desloubières, and Étienne Viard, the Spaniard Eduardo Chillida, and the Franco-Mexican Jorge Dubon. Étienne Viard's oeuvre- which in all its diversity and uniqueness is the focus of this book -is the culmination of several decades of creative work. Via the techniques of folding, cutting, and assemblage, he has produced a whole multitude of forms and transformed Corten steel into representations of rain, forests, and landscapes. Experiments with light, his works also evoke the impression of falling and are composed of intersecting bars of steel and steel elements arranged in sequences, which most often appear to be attempting to stand in a quest to attain an incomplete or fragile equilibrium. A veritable 'poetry of instability', Étienne Viard's works are also reflections on the nature of time.
