Dans cet essai, Catherine Grenier étudie le lien que l'oeuvre
de Jean-Michel Othoniel a toujours entretenu à la spiritualité et
à l'objet sacré. Depuis ses premiers travaux, l'artiste a eu recours
à des références religieuses, populaires ou savantes. Le voile
de Véronique, les reliquaires, les ex-voto, les parures votives ont
servi d'inspiration à des oeuvres qui évoquent le réel, le corps,
la relation, par le biais d'une forme souvent énigmatique et
cryptée. Les émotions les plus extrêmes, de la naissance à la mort,
sont glorifiées et spiritualisées dans ses fragiles objets à la beauté
troublante. Sous les apparences de la poésie de l'intime tout
d'abord, puis du décor et de la séduction lorsqu'il commence à
travailler le verre, un monde transparaît qui avoue ses blessures,
révèle son ambivalence et résiste à l'enchantement.
In her essay, Catherine Grenier studies the long-held relationship
between Jean-Michel Othoniel's work, spirituality and sacred
artefacts. Since his early work the artist has always appealed to
religious, popular and scholarly references. The Veil of Veronica,
reliquaries, ex-votos, and votive finery have all inspired his
exploration of the real, the body and their relationship, in often
enigmatic and coded forms. Life's most extreme emotions from
birth to death are glorified and spiritualised in fragile artefacts of
a disturbing beauty. Through the poetics of intimacy, then of décor
and seduction in his glass works, a world appears that confesses
its wounds, reveals its ambivalence and resists wonderment.
