Omschrijving

Cleonice, Princess of Bithynia: A Tragedy is a play written by John Hoole and first published in 1775. The play is set in ancient Bithynia, a region in what is now modern-day Turkey, and tells the story of Cleonice, the daughter of the king of Bithynia. Cleonice is in love with Demetrius, a young man of low birth, but her father has arranged for her to marry Seleucus, the prince of Syria, in order to form an alliance between the two kingdoms. As the play unfolds, Cleonice struggles with her duty to her father and her love for Demetrius. She is torn between her desire to follow her heart and her obligation to marry Seleucus for the sake of her kingdom. Meanwhile, Demetrius is also torn between his love for Cleonice and his loyalty to his friend and mentor, Antigonus, who is opposed to the marriage. The play is a tragedy, and as the plot unfolds, the characters are faced with difficult choices and tragic consequences. Ultimately, the play explores themes of love, duty, loyalty, and the consequences of political alliances. It is a classic example of 18th-century English drama, with a focus on noble characters and elevated language. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
