Having left behind their homes in Europe and other parts of the world, they made the long voyage to America by steamer ship. Some came with parents or guardians; a few came as stowaways. Whether they traveled in luxury or just barely made it to the other side of the Atlantic, they found themselves a part of one of the grandest waves of human migration that the world has ever known. Children of Ellis Island explores this world and what it was like for an uprooted youngster at America's golden door. There would have been an uneasiness created by a collage of language barriers, but also new friendships with other children that never would have been founded in the old world.
