Carlo Zinelli

Carlo Zinelli (1916-1974), dit aussi Carlo, est une figure majeure et historique de l'Art Brut. Ce catalogue rassemble la totalité de ses travaux conservés à la Collection de l'Art Brut, à Lausanne, y compris de rares collages, et couvre l'ensemble de sa période de création, soit de 1957 à 1972. L'ouvrage contient aussi des photographies inédites de John Phillips montrant notamment Carlo en train de peindre dans l'atelier situé au sein de l'hôpital San Giacomo alla Tomba de Vérone.

Carlo a souvent peint et dessiné sur les deux faces de son support, et ce de manière systématique à partir de 1962. Ses nombreuses oeuvres recto verso sont, à quelques exceptions près, de même qualité et intensité. Le langage graphique de ce créateur italien, caractérisé par la répétition de certains motifs, l'importance de l'écrit dans ses peintures, ainsi que des changements de point de vue et d'échelle, est unique et immédiatement reconnaissable.

Carlo Zinelli (1916-1974), also known as Carlo, is a major figure in the history of Art Brut. This catalogue features all his works belonging to the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, including rare collages, and covers the entire period of his artistic activity, from 1957 to 1972. It also contains previously unpublished photographs by John Phillips, notably showing Carlo painting in the workshop in the San Giacomo alla Tomba hospital, Verona.

Carlo often painted and drew on both sides of the paper, an approach he adopted systematically from 1962. With a few exceptions, his many recto and verso works are of equal quality and intensity. The graphic language of this Italian artist, with its repetition of certain motifs, use of writing and variations of viewpoint and scale, is at once unique and instantly recognisable.
