Palmyre is a Creole woman, and Maurice is white, which makes their romance scandalous in the eyes of the community. The novel explores themes of love, race, and social class, as well as the clash between Northern and Southern cultures. As Maurice and Palmyre navigate their relationship, they must also confront the prejudices and expectations of those around them.
