Bernard Plossu in Arles

Depuis une cinquantaine d'années, Bernard Plossu est venu maintes fois déambuler dans Arles de manière furtive, sans tambour ni trompette. Bernard préfère Arles hors saison, Arles deux fois millénaire, émergeant de l'oubli et connaissant actuellement un grand engouement. À chaque coin de rue, nos regards sont attirés vers le haut pour contempler les modénatures, les corniches, les fenêtres à meneaux, les corbeilles de fruits, les statues des saints perchés. Bernard Plossu pose un regard impertinent où vivants et morts cohabitent. Cette ville est faite de chaos, d'amoncellements, de superpositions, où l'Antiquité côtoie l'architecture d'avant-garde. Arles, c'est le modeste aux côtés de l'opulence. Cette petite ville est un mini royaume aux quartiers entremêlés et distincts, chacun avec son histoire, ses métiers d'antan, des Alyscamps à la Roquette, de Portagnel à Trinquetaille... Bernard Plossu nous livre cette moisson faite de petites choses du quotidien et d'illustres beautés propres à cette ville : lieux sacrés et lumière unique jouent à cache-cache dans cet écrin. Le centre ancien, les bords du Rhône, les grands monuments, l'abbaye de Montmajour et les plaines de la Camargue mais aussi l'Arles d'aujourd'hui... Des textes de 5 écrivain.e.s, romanciers, historiens, sociologues, tous habitants d'Arles ou y ayant habité, accompagnent cette symphonie : Bernard Picon, Christophe Berthoud, Jean Chalendas, Laetitia Talbot, Pierre Parlant.

Over the past fifty years, Bernard Plossu has come to Arles many times, always somewhat stealthily, never with any fanfare. Bernard prefers Arles outside of the busy season, an Arles that has been around for two millennia, an Arles that has emerged from oblivion and is now enjoying a surge of popularity. At every street corner, our eyes are drawn upwards to contemplate the articulations, the cornices, the mullioned windows, the baskets of fruit, the statues of hunched saints. Bernard Plossu casts an impertinent eye upon the spaces where the living and the dead coexist. This city is made of chaos, accumulations, and superimpositions, with antiquity rubbing shoulders with avant-garde architecture. Arles is the modest alongside the opulent. This small city is a miniature kingdom with intermingled and distinctive neighbourhoods, each with its own history, its professions of yesteryear, from Alyscamps to Roquette, from Portagnel to Trinquetaille... Bernard Plossu has offered us a harvest of small everyday things and illustrious beauties specific to the city : sacred places and singular light play hide-and-seek in this showcase. The old city centre, the banks of the Rhone, the great monuments, the Abbey of Montmajour, and the plains of the Camargue, but also the Arles of today... This symphony is accompanied by texts from five writers, novelists, historians, sociologists, all current or former residents of Arles : Bernard Picon, Christophe Berthoud, Jean Chalendas, Laetitia Talbot, and Pierre Parlant.
