Autour de 1550, dans son atelier de Saintes, le potier Bernard Palissy s'emploie à créer une vaisselle unique, qu'il baptisera « rustiques figulines ». Poissons, serpents, coquillages et minéraux y deviennent les protagonistes d'objets luxueux, appréciés de la noblesse.

Pourquoi une iconographie si insolite connut-elle ce vif succès parmi les contemporains de Palissy ? Quelles raisons poussèrent le céramiste à quitter sa profession de peintre sur verre pour se lancer dans la longue élaboration des figulines ? La foi protestante, qu'il défend avec force, a-t-elle joué un rôle dans la genèse de ses créations ?
