Personne aujourd'hui n'incarne mieux le blues que B.B. King. Le conducteur de tracteur d'une plantation du Mississippi est devenu disc-jockey à Memphis avant de s'imposer comme le plus grand chanteur et guitariste de blues (impossible de dissocier l'un de l'autre). S'il a d'abord su toucher sa communauté, il a réussi un incroyable crossover à la fin des années 1960, se faisant d'abord reconnaître par le public rock, puis par ce qu'on a coutume d'appeler le « grand public ». Et cette reconnaissance a été acquise sans la moindre compromission. Au même titre que Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington ou Ray Charles, B.B. King fait partie de ces génies que nous a donnés l'art afro-américain.

Today nobody represents the blues better than B.B. King. The man who drove a tractor on a Mississippi plantation became a disc-jockey in Memphis before establishing himself as the greatest blues singer-guitarist (the two are inseparable). If he first made his mark on his own community, he also managed the most incredible crossover in the late Sixties, when he obtained the recognition of rock fans and, later, of those customarily referred to as a « mass audience ». And he acquired this recognition without making any compromises. Like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington or Ray Charles, B.B. King definitely belongs to the geniuses who gave us Afro-American art.
