Axel is a historical novel written by Swedish author Esaias Tegner and published in 1866. The book is set in the 16th century and follows the story of Axel, a young nobleman who becomes embroiled in the political and religious conflicts of his time. The novel is divided into three parts, each of which focuses on a different period in Axel's life.In the first part, Axel is introduced as a young man who is sent to study in Germany. While there, he becomes involved in the Protestant Reformation and becomes a fervent supporter of the movement. He returns to Sweden and becomes embroiled in the political struggles between the king and the nobility. The second part of the novel takes place several years later, when Axel is a middle-aged man. He has become disillusioned with the political situation in Sweden and has retired to his estate. However, he is drawn back into the political arena when he becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the king. The third and final part of the novel takes place during the reign of King Gustav Vasa. Axel is now an old man and has become a trusted advisor to the king. However, he is forced to confront his own mortality when he is diagnosed with a terminal illness.Throughout the novel, Tegner explores themes of political power, religious conflict, and personal morality. The character of Axel serves as a symbol of the struggle between individual conscience and the demands of society. The novel has been praised for its vivid portrayal of 16th century Sweden and its complex characters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
